Karlag, Gulag in Kazakhstan
Karlag, located near Karaganda, was one of the most significant and long-lasting camp complexes in the Soviet Gulag system. Operating from 1931 to 1959, it held a staggering number of prisoners — over 60,000 people were kept within its borders, not counting special settlers and the local population.
